Athletes, bodybuilders and fitness competitors are often confused about which supplements they should be using to reach their goals. There are so many different products on the market and each serves a unique function. The purpose of the Athlete’s Supplement Pyramid is to provide you with a hierarchy guide that can help you decide which supplements you should use to best meet your goals. Also, if your cash flow is tight and you don’t have the luxury of an unlimited supplement budget then this pyramid will help you prioritize your supplement purchases based on order of necessity. The core foundation of the Supplement Pyramid is centered on the base, which is made up of Nutritional Foundation Supplements. The next level in the hierarchy is Recovery Support Supplements, followed by Goal-Specific Supplements, and finally, at the apex of the pyramid, Condition-Specific Supplements.
Nutritional Foundation Supplements
Nutritional Foundation Supplements are those that you should be taking year-round in order to meet your basic nutritional needs. Supplements in this category are considered the base of your supplement regime and should be prioritized over all other supplements in the pyramid. Essential supplements such as protein powder, essential fatty acids (EFAs), vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, greens products and fiber will help you meet your essential nutrient needs. Now of course, many of these nutrients can be obtained from food, so if you’re diet is spot on then you might not need to use all of the aforementioned supplements. However, it can often be difficult for athletes to meet all of their basic nutritional requirements through food alone. In order to maintain optimal health and body function and to help prevent illness and disease you must ensure your basic nutrient needs are met. Once you have your Nutritional Foundation Supplements covered, then you can move up the Supplement Pyramid hierarchy and begin addressing Recovery Support Supplements.

Nutritional Foundation Supplements

Protein Powder
Protein is an extremely important part of an athlete’s diet. Protein, which is made up of amino acids, is essential for proper growth and repair of muscle tissue and is vital to maintaining optimal health. Most athletes find that the most convenient way to make sure they’re getting enough protein throughout the day is to use a high-quality protein supplement.

Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs)
EFAs, also referred to as polyunsaturated fats, provide a host of health benefits and can support optimal body function. Polyunsaturated fats include omega-3s (alpha-linolenic acid) and omega-6s (linoleic acid), and these types of fat are deemed essential and must be obtained from your diet (or supplements) because they can’t be made by the body.

Multi-Vitamin/Mineral
A good multi-vitamin/mineral supplement can help ensure that you’re meeting your basic micronutrient needs. Athletes often have greater micronutrient requirements than the average person, so it’s a good idea to make sure your daily requirements are covered by using a good multi formula.

Antioxidants
Antioxidants are substances that scavenge free radicals, which are damaging compounds in the body that alter cell membranes, tamper with DNA, and even cause cell death. Free radicals occur naturally in the body, but environmental toxins can also increase the number of these damaging particles. Free radicals are believed to contribute to a number of health problems. Antioxidant supplements can neutralize free radicals and can reduce or even prevent some of the damage they cause.

Greens Products
Greens products provide your body with many essential ‘green’ nutrients that can be difficult to obtain from food alone. Daily use of a quality greens product can increase energy and vitality and optimize overall health and well being. Greens supplements can also help maintain acid-base balance in the body, which is a critical aspect of human health.

Fiber Supplements
There are two types of fiber and both have unique functions in the body. You may want to supplement with both types of fiber, or just one type, depending on what is lacking in your diet. Soluble fiber binds with fatty acids and prolongs stomach emptying time so that sugar is released and absorbed more slowly. Insoluble fiber moves bulk through the intestines and controls and balances acidity in the intestines.

Recovery Support Supplements
Any hard-training athlete or bodybuilder understands that optimal recovery from intense training must be addressed through proper nutrition and supplementation. After an intense workout, your body is primed and ready to soak up the nutrients it needs to enhance tissue repair and recovery, but you’ve got to get those nutrients to your muscles quickly or else recovery will be compromised. Post-workout is the ideal time to consume a liquid supplement because it’s rapidly absorbed and delivered to muscle tissue much faster than whole foods. Research clearly shows that after an intense workout, athletes can benefit from a fast-acting protein and carbohydrate source and the immune-boosting amino acid glutamine. Immediately after every workout, try having a serving of whey protein isolate with waxy maize starch and 5 to 10 grams of glutamine. This simple yet effective supplement stack will help you recover faster and can even improve performance during your next training session!

Recovery Support Supplements

Whey Protein Powder
Whey protein is considered the highest quality protein source available, and whey protein isolate is considered the best of all types of whey. Whey isolate has a biological value of up to 159, which is higher than any other protein source in the world. It’s also very high in branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and is absorbed extremely quickly. After a workout, when your muscles need a fast-acting source of essential amino acids to optimize recovery and repair, whey protein isolate is your best choice.

Fast-Acting Carbohydrates
After intense exercise, a host of physiological reactions take place in your body, priming it for growth, recovery and repair. In order to take full advantage of the ‘post-workout window’ and enhance recovery, you must quickly replenish your body’s glycogen stores with a fast-acting carb source. Waxy maize starch (WMS) is a high molecular weight carbohydrate and rapidly moves through the stomach and gets to your muscles faster than any other carb source on the planet!

Glutamine
Glutamine is the most abundant free amino acid in the body and many research studies show that intense exercise can cause a decrease in plasma glutamine levels. Scientists believe that a decrease in glutamine levels can cause a cascade of negative effects, which can easily be corrected with glutamine supplementation. Athletes that might be prone to overtraining and depleted glutamine stores can definitely benefit from the recovery-enhancing properties that glutamine has to offer.

Goal-Specific Supplements
Goal-Specific Supplements make up the third level of the Supplement Pyramid hierarchy. Supplements that fall into this category can be used in addition to the Nutritional Foundation and Recovery Support supplements to help you reach a specific goal, such as muscle growth, fat loss, or performance enhancement.
Muscle-Building Supplements
When it comes to muscle-building supplements, there are countless different products on the market. This category of supplements can get really confusing, so you should focus your attention on the most effective products in this category, which includes Creatine supplements, amino acids, testosterone boosters and weight gainers. Although there are many other new supplements that claim to increase muscle growth, the ones just mentioned have the greatest collection of scientific research to support their effectiveness!

Goal-Specific Supplements: Muscle Builders

Creatine-Based Products
Creatine is the most research-proven sports supplement of all time. Creatine has the ability to increase strength, power, speed, overall athletic performance, and of course, muscle growth. Any athlete or bodybuilder who’s looking to pack on muscle should definitely include a top-quality Creatine product in their supplement regime.

Branched-Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs)
BCAAs are a group of essential amino acids that play a key role in protein synthesis (a.k.a. muscle growth). The three BCAAs are leucine, isoleucine and valine. Countless scientific studies have confirmed the incredibly powerful effects that BCAAs have on muscle growth at the cellular level. If your goal is to increase muscle growth, then the best times to supplement with BCAAs are before and after exercise.

Testosterone Boosters
Testosterone is the body’s most powerful muscle-building hormone and elevated testosterone levels can result in greater muscle growth. There are quite a few testosterone-boosting supplements available on the market and many of them can effectively boost testosterone levels, without any negative side effects. TESTOFEN, a patented extract derived from fenugreek, is considered one of the most effective testosterone-boosting compounds currently available on the market.

Weight Gainers
Weight gainers supply your body with a surplus of calories, which your body needs to grow and get bigger. Many athletes or hard-gainers simply can’t take in enough calories on a daily basis to put their body in a caloric surplus, so that’s when a weight gainer can really be beneficial. In fact, a research study shows that the addition of 1000 to 2000 calories per day to a regular diet can result in significant gains in lean mass and strength.

Fat Loss Supplements
The fat loss supplement category is much like the muscle-building, as there are a lot of different options to choose from. To avoid the confusion, the fat loss category will be broken down into three main groups, thermogenic fat burners, appetite suppressants, and ‘fat-burning fats’. A good thermogenic supplement can increase caloric expenditure and give you an added energy boost when following a calorie restricted diet. Appetite suppressants are a great help if you get a lot of cravings and have trouble staying on track with your diet. ‘Fat-burning fats’ such as CLA and MCTs can help boost overall metabolism, increase fat oxidation and reduce fat storage.

Goal-Specific Supplements: Fat Burners

Thermogenic Fat Burners
Thermogenic fat burners are designed to increase fat loss through a process called thermogenesis, which is the process of heat production. As heat production increases in the body so does caloric expenditure and fat burning. Thermogenic fat burners are scientifically designed to increase calorie burning and fat oxidation, which results in a higher metabolic rate and greater overall fat loss.

Appetite Suppressants
Appetite suppressant supplements are designed to curb your appetite and help you stay on track with your diet, and in the end, this will enhance your fat loss results. Hoodia is one of the more popular appetite-suppressant products on the market, but the research supporting its efficacy is still in question. One of the most research-proven appetite-curbing supplements is a compound called glucomannan, which is a water-soluble form of fiber. Its unique properties allow it to expand in the stomach and promote feelings of satiety. Glucomannan also helps regulate blood sugar levels, which is another benefit that can help enhance fat burning in the body.

‘Fat-Burning Fats’ – CLA & MCTs
Yes, it’s true; certain fats can actually help you burn fat. Two supplemental fat sources in particular that are quite effective at enhancing fat loss are conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs). CLA is a slightly altered form of linoleic acid (LA), an omega-6 fatty acid. CLA works to reduce body fat by preventing fat accumulation in fat cells and can also increase energy expenditure by increasing the release of norepinephrine, which is one of the body’s most powerful fat-burning hormones. MCTs can also enhance fat loss, and in fact, multiple studies indicate that supplementation with MCTs can increase energy expenditure, reduce fat mass, improve nitrogen retention and preserve lean mass.

Performance Enhancers
Performance-enhancing supplements are those which are used to immediately increase physical performance in the gym or on the playing field. Some products are designed to increase strength and power, whereas others increase endurance capacity and prevent fatigue. Pre-workout supplements have gained great popularity over the past few years and can definitely help improve performance through multiple mechanisms of action. Nitric oxide boosters are supplements that can be classified as performance enhancers because of their ability to increase blood flow and nutrient and oxygen delivery to working muscles. There are also many very effective endurance-enhancing products on the market that many distance runners, cyclists and other athletes find effective. Beta-alanine is one of the newer ingredients worth trying, as research studies indicate that it can significantly improve endurance capacity and prevent fatigue!

Goal-Specific Supplements: Performance Enhancers

Pre-Workout Supplements
Over the past few years, pre-workout supplementshave gained great popularity with athletes and bodybuilders because they can result in an immediate increase in physical performance. There is a multitude of different formulas on the market and many of them are quite effective. These products are great to use when you hit a plateau, as they can help push past your previous physical limits!

Nitric Oxide (NO) Boosters
Nitric oxide (NO) boosters could be considered  muscle builders; however, there is more scientific evidence to support NO boosters as performance enhancers. NO supplements supply the body with the building blocks needed to increase NO production in the body. When you increase NO levels, blood flow is increased along with oxygen and nutrient delivery to working muscles. Then end result is an increase in overall physical performance.

Endurance Enhancers
Endurance supplements are a rapidly growing category in the sports supplement industry. Both athletes and bodybuilders can benefit from endurance supplements because they allow one to sustain a higher level of performance for a longer period of time. One of the hottest endurance enhancers on the market right now is beta-alanine. When used as a supplement, beta-alanine is taken up by skeletal muscles, and together with histidine is re-synthesized into carnosine by an enzyme called carnosine synthetase. Research shows that an increase in intramuscular carnosine levels can increase the buffering capacity of a muscle by up to 20%. By increasing the buffering capacity of muscle, beta-alanine supplementation can result in a dramatic delay of muscle fatigue and failure, and considerable improvements in muscular working capacity and performance.

Condition-Specific Supplements
The peak of the Supplement Pyramid is where Condition-Specific Supplements fit into the mix. These supplements are those that are useful only under specific conditions or to address a particular health issue. For example, someone who has trouble sleeping could certainly benefit from a natural sleep-aid supplement. A natural diuretic supplement could be very useful for a competitive bodybuilder or MMA fighter to help shed excess water weight before a competition. There’s a long list of products that could fall into this category, but to keep things simple we’re going to focus on the following condition-specific supplements: sleep, joint, stress, detoxification support and diuretic supplements.

Condition-Specific Supplements

Sleep Support
Your physical performance and the progress you make from your training can be greatly affected by the quality of sleep you get at night. If you don’t get the right amount of quality sleep each night then your results in the gym will certainly be compromised. If you’re having trouble sleeping then a sleep support supplement may be quite helpful. Melatonin and 5-HTP are two of the best supplements available that you can use to help improve the quality of your sleep.

Joint Support
If you have joint pain or discomfort then your physical performance can certainly suffer. Thank goodness there are many effective joint support formulas available on the market. The most research-proven joint supplement is a combination of glucosamine and chondroitin. Make sure you choose a brand that supplies the proper dose of each. The majority of the research shows that you need 1500 mg of glucosamine and 1200 mg chondroitin sulfate daily to reduce joint pain and discomfort.

Stress Support
Stress can cause a variety of negative effects on the body that can decrease your performance, recovery and overall results. If you find your stress levels are getting out of whack, then you might benefit from using a stress support supplement. There are many different formulas on the market, but you’ll want to use one that has some of the more research-proven compounds available. Some of the most effective stress-reducing compounds are American and Asian ginseng, chamomile, lemon balm, valerian, ashwagandha, phosphatidylserine, and 5-HTP.

Detoxification Support
Lifestyle factors play a major role in the number of toxins that accumulate in your body. Athletes that are subjected to a high level of toxins could potentially benefit from detox supplements. Detoxifiers generally support optimal health of the liver, which plays a major role in eliminating toxins from the body. Milk thistle is one of the most effective and popular liver detoxifiers available to date.

Diuretic Support
Many bodybuilders and MMA fighters use natural diuretic supplements to rid the body of excess subcutaneous water before a competition. Although it is not healthy to use these products for an extended period of time, they can be quite effective for short-term use. Examples of popular diuretic herbs are dandelion, uva ursi, juniper berry, hydrangea and parsley. Most experts recommend that you only use herbal diuretics for three to five days at most.

The Final Word on the Athlete’s Supplement Pyramid
Now that you have a good understanding of the Athlete’s Supplement Pyramid, use it to your advantage and prioritize your supplement purchases based on your budget, needs and goals. Just remember, the core of your supplement program should always be built from the base of the pyramid, which is made up of Nutritional Foundation Supplements.
