THE EVOLUTION OF AN ATHLETE

We all get stuck in our ways – some are stuck in the same gym, the same diet or the same mindset.  The downfall of being a professional or competitive athlete is that if you don’t constantly evolve, you get left behind and this is something I know all too well. With improvements in training methodology, nutrition, recovery and mental training (sport psychology, NLP etc.), athletes are extending their careers longer than ever; it is the failure to adapt to the new ways that shows an athlete’s weaknesses or age.

So for the next few months this blog will have a dual approach;

Firstly, after a long layoff I will be stepping back into the MMA ring this June.  Leading up to this fight I will be documenting my training regime and diet, as well as the ups and downs of being an “experienced” athlete.  I will be adopting many of the new cutting edge training methods as well as some of the old school and putting them to the test in the cage. At the very least this should provide some comic relief.

Secondly, in the spirit of evolution I am up for a challenge. If you have suggestions for great training facilities in Alberta, let’s hear them.  Whether it be rock climbing, yoga, spin or maybe something I’ve never heard of (please no dancing), I will try them out and give my honest reviews each week - along with some of my unfortunate friends that I drag along.

I look forward to hearing your suggestions and let the fun (and pain) begin!
