GOAL SETTING IS KEY!

It is that time of year again where many of you may be looking to make those New Year’s Resolutions.  You know… starting that list of everything you want to start, bad habits to break, new experiences you want to try, tasks to accomplish.  How detailed are these resolutions as you start working on them?  Do you keep them pretty vague so that you do not feel so bad if you do not end up completing them?  Or do you create ones that are attainable?  

 

There is a common acronym that is used for goal setting…SMART.  Making sure that they are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-based.  Implementing this acronym can take your goal from “I want to lose 10 lbs” to “I want to lose 10 lbs by eating better and moving more for vacation on June 16th.”  

 

The SMART goal definitely has more thought put into it and gets more specific with what you want to attain. However, it is not very tactical!  Eating better and moving more is still pretty vague and leaves the door open for emotional interpretation depending on the moment.  So what about getting more detailed from the beginning to take the SMART goal a step further to include the action plan - the HOW! 

 

Including thoughts on how you plan to achieve your goals will get your mind in a place for action.  It takes the SMART goal to the next level!  Now, your goal becomes “I want to lose 10 lbs by eating nutrient dense whole foods, 5 times per day, lifting weights 3 times per week and adding cardio twice a week.”  

 

 

Now you may want to set goals but you have no clue where to start.  Then the “how”  can be “Call my friend tomorrow who had great results with her trainer to schedule a consultation with him/her about my goal to formulate a plan.”  Creating an action item to accomplish sets it into action!
