FITNESS MODEL: Andrene A. Powell

Bio: I was born in Kingston, Jamaica where I still currently reside. Started my fitness journey January 30, 2015 at 206lbs, where I did mostly cardio exercises then began my weight lifting journey August 2015. I have now been lifting for 1 year and 10 months and to this day it is one of the best decisions I could have made. Started competing August 2016 where I entered the body fitness category at the JABBFA (Jamaica Bodybuilding & Fitness Association) show and placed 4th and have been competing since then. Also competed at the Fitness Atlantic US Championship on April 29, 2017 and won in my transformation division. That moment definitely headed the list of my best life experiences. I am now an athlete, something I never thought I would be able to say and I want to show persons they can step outside their comfort zone and achieve greatness.

Training Plan: My current training plan consists of weight training 5 days per week with core exercises incorporated for about 15mins and 30 – 40 minutes cardio after each lifting session. Every Saturday I also do spinning and dancing but this is more therapeutic for me as it is not a part of my preparation when I am about to compete.

I want to show people they can step outside their comfort zone and achieve greatness.

Nutritional Plan: Have no strict plan at the moment. With my lifestyle change I focus on portion control, eating up to 6 times per day and smaller well thought out meals. I tend to have a high protein diet and cycle carbs and fats where necessary. My lean proteins (chicken breast, egg whites, white fish etc.) are a must and my healthy go to carbs are normally sweet potatoes, oatmeal and at times rice. I have a sweet tooth so there are moments when I balance things out with a slice of cake or Bulla (Jamaican pastry). Staying hydrated is also very important especially when you live in the tropics. I drink between 1.5 – 2 gallons of water per day.

Supplement Plan: Daily multivitamins are a given and I also use Whey Protein as a meal substitute which I most times blend with spinach to make a nutritious shake.

What separates Status from other fitness magazines: Status from my experience is not only passionate about fitness but also has a genuine interest in the athletes they work with and also has an exceptional team.

What would it mean to you to become a “Status Symbol”: It would definitely be a dream realized and I would be eternally grateful. It would also give me the opportunity to motivate someone using a more influential medium and that it in fact one and probably the most important mission on my journey #inspire.

What would it mean to you to grace the cover of Status? It would be a great blessing and I would be lost for words as Status is the best and covers only the best! I would hurdle over the moon with joy.

Describe what it means to you to be part of your fitness team? I represent Team Fit Farm Fitness in Kingston, Jamaica. Started on June 9, 2016 and never looked back since. Audrey Allwood (owner) also competed in her day welcomed me with open arms and I am happy to be a part of such a great team with great athletes.

Describe your coaches and the impact they have on you? My competition coach & trainer Alicia Spearman IFBB pro athlete played a crucial role in my preparation for Fitness Atlantic. She did my meal plans and workout plans and made me realize I am capable of so much more. Her guidance definitely aided in my win and I appreciate all her efforts. Even though she lives overseas we still followed up on a daily basis and progress information was always sent when required. I also have a local trainer at home Shevon Kerr who is a trainer at Fit Farm Fitness Club. He was one of the first persons who made me feel welcomed and aided in my growth and progress since I started until this day. He pushes me past my limit and I look forward to hearing his best quote “one more set” lol. I am blessed to have a great support system as an upcoming athlete you will need all the help you can get.

If you could ask Status Fitness Magazine Editor in Chief Rodney Jang any industry question, what would that be? What advice would you give an upcoming athlete who wishes to succeed in the fitness world?

Status Fitness Magazine Editor in Chief Rodney Jang is rarely on set for photo shoots.  Describe your experience working with him? Rodney Jang is a smooth operator. His presence is so calm and collective and he definitely has expert knowledge of the fitness industry.

What was it like working with your photographer Ali Sohrab for your shoot for Status publication? Ali is the greatest! He should wear a tag that states that. He made the shoot such an easy process. He is a natural at what he does and I am blessed to have met him.

Describe your experience at the Fitness Atlantic show? As you know I travelled from Jamaica to compete in the Fitness Atlantic show. It is literally the best show ever. It was more than a mere bodybuilding show it was a live production. Everything from stage to lighting was given much thought. Great staff and also great competitors. Everyone was so supportive even persons in your category which is rare to find, I even made lifelong friends. I have no regrets and the travel was well worth it not only because I won in my division but also because I got to experience such a great level of kindness from the backstage security to the producers of the show.

Are you a trainer? How many people do you train? Not a trainer as yet but making preparations to become one. I do help a lot of persons though following my fitness journey.

Your transformation story. My transformation started January 30, 2015. My starting weight was 206lbs and I decided to take control of my life. My bad eating habits and food choices had to change. I started eating cleaner meals; lean proteins, dark green leafy vegetables, fruits etc. Minimized my salt intake and avoided sugars. Also stopped eating processed foods and prepped my own meals. I also started living an active lifestyle and for the first 6 months of my journey I did cardio exercises then a couple months after incorporated weight training. I mostly do free weights and now I am currently 142lbs. Lost a total 64lbs to date however for my last show (Fitness Atlantic) my stage weight was 132lbs. I am also 110lbs muscle and body fat percentage is currently 19%. I am a happier, healthier more confident person and my journey hasn’t ended as this has become a lifestyle change and I am eager to see the additional progress my body will make and help as many as I can along the way.
