FITNESS MODEL: RACHEL HANSON

A LITTLE ABOUT RACHEL

Growing up with 3 brothers all in athletics, I naturally followed suit. With no sisters to play dolls with, sports became a way of life in my household. Being the only girl pushed me to always strive to over achieve. The boys naturally always had a one up on me...Strength.
My mother was such an inspiration my whole life to always make health and nutrition a priority!

From a young age I developed a healthy drive in myself, striving always to push myself and to reach my goals. From Arizona State swimmer at the age of 8 to WBFF commercial Model at 30 - not to mention all my accomplishments in between.

MY MOTHER WAS SUCH AN INSPIRATION MY WHOLE LIFE TO ALWAYS MAKE HEALTH AND NUTRITION A PRIORITY!

No journey comes without struggle...but it's overcoming those struggles that makes you a true champion. With my unstoppable drive for perfection came an unhealthy habit. I developed an eating disorder by the age of 14. This continued until the age of 26. Seeking recovery I took an entire year to heal and embrace the amazing gift I was given from a young age. Drive. I became excited to dedicate my life to inspire others to learn to love themselves and embrace their bodies, mind and souls. I want to encourage men and women of all sizes and backgrounds that there is beauty in all body types. I want to inspire men and women that no matter what the obstacle...always persevere!
I am a mother now to an amazing 9-year old boy and I want to be an example to him that no Dream is too big. Always follow you heart and never stop! That drive inside each and every one of us is our calling to be a champion!!!

SPOTLIGHT INTERVIEW

What is your athletic background Rachel, and how did you become interested in fitness and commercial modeling? Growing up in a family of 3 brothers and having a fitness instructor for a mom I was definitely born into the industry! I was an all around athlete playing more than 5 sports in my school years. I started modeling at a young age and I was also a trained dancer. Fitness was and will always be number one in my life. It's who I am. I wanted to get into fitness competitions and commercial modeling because it's a great way for me to continue my love for them both in my adult life.

What do you like to do in your off time? I love to travel!!! I always loved the saying "once a year go someplace you've never been." I live by that motto!!!

What is your biggest accomplishment in life? My biggest accomplishment in life is being a mother.! I have an amazing 9-year old son who inspires me every day to be a better version of myself. Seeing his desire to live life and follow his dreams is my biggest accomplishment!

How do you set your goals? I'm a natural dreamer so when asked what's my secret to success I say being an optimist. Another amazing quote I live by was written by Napoleon Hill. He said "Set a goal so big that if you achieved it, it would blow your mind." That's how I set my goals.

What inspired you, or who inspired you to compete? What do you enjoy most about competing? I have so many amazing people who inspired me! Life is a journey and it’s not complete without the ups and downs. My brother Derek inspired me the most. In 2012 he almost lost his life and he spent 6 months in the ICU. In that time I watched him fight for his life and he never gave up. I was by his side and I was his cheerleader through this fight. After he recovered I realized that life is so fragile. If you want something in life go get it! He taught me that through hard work and dedication and never giving up you can accomplish anything! He is now fully recovered with a second chance at life. He became a personal trainer and he helped train me for my first competition. What I enjoy most about competing is the incredible feeling you get in the end when you accomplish your goals.

Who did you train with? I trained with my amazing WBFF Pro trainer Chantell Kelly from South Africa. I reached out to her when she was competing at worlds in Las Vegas. She is incredible and I couldn't have done it without her support and guidance. I also trained with my brother Derek. He pushed me and inspired me every day!

Why did you choose the WBFF? And what was your experience with the show. What was your placing? The WBFF was my choice because it represented who I was. I have a love for not only fitness but fashion as well. I had the most amazing experience. I placed in the top 5 in the Bikini Model Category in Atlantic City. I also placed 1st in commercial model category qualifying for Worlds in London in August of 2017.

What are your future goals, dreams and plans? I'm so excited to continue my fitness career by competing in my next WBFF show in Arizona July 1st. My next goal is to gain Pro Status in the Bikini Model category and be able to compete at Worlds in that category. I am also competing like I said before at Worlds for Commercial Model. I want to be a front runner in this industry and grace the covers of the top magazines. I want to inspire all those that feel that nudge from within to do something big...to listen to that. To go for whatever you want to accomplish. My brother’s chance for survival was slim. But he did it and so can you!

What was the best advice you were ever given? The best advice I was ever given was given to me by my amazing parents. "Go for it" was something both of them would always say. They were always there for my brothers and me. They believed in us and supported us in whatever our dreams were! I now share that same advice with my son...Go for it! Follow your dreams!

What one or two things that you did in your training that were keys to your success? Positive self talk and Confidence. You have to believe in yourself before anyone else will.

Do you have any tips for someone who is looking to compete in your sport? Yes for sure! Find an amazing coach to inspire you and push you throughout your journey. It's so important to have someone to push you and to motivate you. And second find a goal/ reason and or meaning for your competition. It helps to motivate you and gives you purpose for getting on that stage!

Do you take any supplements? If yes what are some of your favorite supplements and why? I always take a superfood supplement to make sure I'm getting all the right vitamins and nutrients throughout my training. I take an amazing protein shake when I'm needing a quick meal and I don't have a prep meal on hand. I also take an amazing after workout creatine to help with recovery.

You did an exclusive photo shoot with Ali Sohrab. What was it like to shoot with Ali? What advice do you give to up and coming fitness models when looking to shoot with photographers? I was so excited to be able to shoot with Ali. I have experience in modeling but I'm new to the fitness modeling. He made the transition so easy. He is a true Artist! You can just tell from the moment you meet him he is in his element. A true professional and an incredible Photographer!!! My advice to new upcoming fitness models is to bring your confidence and yourself to the shoot. Be present!!! Ali inspired me so much during our shoot to be present! Mind-body presence. I also used that advice in my first competition. I'm forever grateful to Ali and I'm so excited for our future shoots!

Do you have a saying or motto that you live your life by?  Yes! My favorite saying that I live by is "She believed she could so she did."  Whatever I set my mind to I know through hard work and dedication I can achieve it!

Tell us 3 things we don’t know about you. First, I was named after Rachel McLish, the famous bodybuilding champion. Second, my favorite cheat meal is not pizza...it’s Mexican Food ;), and Third, Leg days are my favorite! Yes that's right...I love Leg days!!!
