According to surveys, getting into shape is the number one New Year's Resolution.  For all of you who have committed to shaping up as your New Year's Resolution don't be discouraged when you pull into the parking lot and you are left circling a few times before finding a spot.  Committing to getting in shape in January is a lot like running a marathon.  On the front end you will find yourself surrounded by a bunch of people competing for the same thing - a nautilus machine or a set of dumbbells.  Much like a marathon treat your New Year's resolution to get in shape like a competition - a competition with yourself.  Treat the gym crowd like they are the other runners in a marathon.  Look around the gym and observe all of the people in there now.  As the days and weeks begin to go by, keep tabs on the names and faces in the gym crowd as it begins to thin out as you stay committed and get closer and closer to your goal.  Don't let yourself be one of the many people who start out strong but quickly fall behind after a few weeks of missed workouts and reverting to old habits.  Stay focused and committed on the goal that you have set for yourself this year.  Here are a few tips to help you start and finish strong to help you achieve your fitness goals in 2010.

  • Set realistic goals for the New Year- Think about what fitness goals you want to see yourself accomplish in the New Year and write them down.  Keep this as a visible reminder to help yourself to help you stay focused and motivated throughout the year.
  • Prepare your schedule and food in advance- If you want to find time to go to the gym than you have to make time.  Plan out your days and weeks in advance and always schedule in time for you to work-out.  Same goes with food preparation, prepare your food in advance for packing and on the go meals.  It is much easier to stick to a nutrition program when you have food with you and you are prepared.
  • Keep a food and exercise journal- Take a few minutes every day to write down your workouts and your keep track of nutrition.  Not only does doing this allow you to keep track of your progress but it helps keep you focused and holds you accountable to achieving your goals.
  • Find a workout partner- Find someone who will work out with you in the gym.  Having the support of a family member, friend, or co-worker will make staying motivated and achieving your fitness goals that much easier.

Oh and one more thing....if you are planning on working out in a gym, please remember proper gym etiquette and show some patience because it probably will be a little crowded for the next few weeks.  If you have any other tips or suggestions on how you are going to keep your New Year's resolution of getting shape, send me a message as I would love to hear from you!

Happy Training!
