Fitness photoshoots are like magic Wands. They transform gyms into ballrooms, runners into heals, sweat into perfume, Pain into celebration, and dreams into opportunities. One thing that fascinates me about photographing Fitness models is the fact that they have the ability to instantly switch their mind from being a hardcore athlete to an unleashed diva, and vice versa.

Today SPOTLIGHT is on Rah Engstrom. This successful athlete and yoga instructor is poised with strength, beauty, and sophistication.

FITNESS MODEL: Rah Engstrom

Bio I find a beautiful balance with my corporate career as a VP in Information Security, WBFF PRO Diva Fitness Model, Yoga Instructor and champion for many friends and clients who are working hard to create their own balanced, healthy life. My favorite place is Costa Rica, and I’ve hosted one yoga retreat down there. My goal is to host more retreats to help people re-align mind, body and soul in an amazing country.

Transformation story – My transformation story isn’t external really, and it’s still evolving. It was an internal transformation – one in my mind. I had no reason to hate myself when I was a teenager, but somewhere that came into my mental story. I made choices that were not in alignment with who I wanted to be in the world, and I held myself back from so many events and conversations – because of the stories I would make up in my mind. I now live with so much more energy, excitement and interest – to challenge myself daily – and to try to subscribe to this other favorite quote – “Do one thing every day that scares you.” ~ Eleanor Roosevelt. I try to reset my initial reaction to things which are fear-based to possibility-based, which again is an ongoing exercise. It takes time to evolve your internal record player, but I’ve made some gains that I’m so proud of. One was finally teaching yoga – and now I’ve been teaching for over 5 years, I’ve turned dislikers of yoga into lovers and I have the opportunity to share yoga and Costa Rica with so many people in my future.

Fitness Goals – After competing in 13 competitions since 2011, my fitness goal is to maintain a happy, healthy physique in balance with all of my life goals

Training Plan – I strength train 5 times a week, practice yoga 2-3 times a week and run the beautiful lakes of Minneapolis during the warmer months.

Thoughts on HIIt, Power lifting, TRX, Yoga, bodybuilding, other. – I love them all! I think it’s important to try new things to find what you love – and the trainers you love. I know enough that I can strength train on my own, but I love the community, challenge and fun that comes with group fitness and yoga classes.

I try to reset my initial reaction to things which are fear-based to possibility-based, which again is an ongoing exercise.

Nutritional & Supplements I do believe in supplementation. When I started taking quality vitamins and products with additional minerals, protein and amino acids, I noticed a huge difference in how I showed up in the world. My immunity, energy and clarity completely changed when I started supplementing. Regular food just isn’t enough these days with all of the insecticides, pesticides, depletion of soil, etc.

Special skills? I LOVE arm balances in yoga – crow, side crow, handstand – you name it! I love doing them – anytime, anyplace – and they make the party more fun.

What do your parents mean to you? What did they teach you? – I grew up the third girl to loving, hard-working parents in Iowa. Both parents were in education and have since retired and found their second wind. They winter down in Florida and love to travel and enjoy life after smart saving and investing. My sisters, parents and I have a Whatsapp group and chat pretty much every day and have so much fun even though we’re not physically in the same place.

What separates Status from other fitness magazines? – I love how Status fitness has forged its own path and brought talented individuals forward to share their stories. I also appreciate the partnership and love Status has had for my WBFF family. I’ve had so much fun shooting for Status – the photographers on staff are incredible.

Regular food just isn’t enough these days with all of the insecticides, pesticides, depletion of soil, etc.

What would it mean to you to become the next Status Fitness Cover-model? Representing me, my brand, my personal and career achievements, and my love for fitness on a cover would be a dream come true! I believe I have achieved a well-balanced life and have been successful in many capacities – from balancing a career to competing in 13 fitness shows to impacting people with my yoga instruction to traveling the world. I believe it’s all possible if you put your mind – and your time – to it.

What was it like working with photographer Ali Sohrab? – We had a blast! I’ve shot with many talented photographers, and I really liked Ali’s energy, focus and creativity. He was efficient and came in with a plan that demonstrated his confidence. We got a variety of shots and I’m very happy with the portfolio. I hope we can work together again soon.

Three things people would not know about you. – I grew up in Iowa and would spend summers working in corn fields, I lived in India for 5 months in 2013 and I’m addicted to Chapstick.

Who inspires you? – Leaders who are inspired by their purpose and their message – and who are sharing it with the world and changing lives for the better. We all need those people!

Who do you wish to inspire? – I wish to inspire those people who haven’t found their voice, their message or their vehicle. I also wish to inspire people who have lost sight of their beautiful selves – that are weighed down by something someone said or did in their history – and have dimmed their God-given light because of that.

I wish to inspire those people who haven’t found their voice, their message or their vehicle.

Life goals – My husband and I would like to retire to Costa Rica and host yoga retreats so that people can revive a bit, experience some adventure and epic sunsets, and return to their lives with some renewed purpose and peace after “Pura Vida” or “Pure Life”.

Two most important lessons you have learned – BE YOU and BE KIND

Favorite actors/ movies Quentin Tarintino was one of my first “favorite actors” with Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. I love the character development and conversation; although his material can be a bit tough to watch at times. I also am loving the period pieces on Netflix – anything Elizabethan or Western – such as the limited series Godless. Sooooo good.

BE YOU

First most important attribute you see in a person? Kindness, humor, passion, commitment and authenticity

Advice you can give to children who want to start training? – Take it slow, feel your body and take time to rest. If I had learned yoga and meditation earlier in my youth, I believe I would have focused on different things and made different choices when I was younger.
