Fitness Model: Trish Spessa

Fitness Goals: To live a fit lifestyle and setting goals to keep bettering myself. I, also, set out to inspire those around me and I love to educate those who need a little guidance in their own fitness journeys

Training Plan: I have an amazing coach Alicia Gowans - I do strength training x5 days, abdominal & METCON x1 day and active rest x1 day I, also, work on stretching & mobility...

Thoughts on HIIT, Power lifting, TRX, Yoga, bodybuilding, other: I believe all forms of the listed exercises can make a massive impact in anyone's life and for me I have always been drawn to bodybuilding and how it has changed my body and life. I have close colleagues and friends who swear by the mental and spiritual benefits of yoga. It's also a wonderful way to stretch out my muscles post a heavy weight session.

Hiit is an excellent way to burn calories when you are time poor and in need of a quick workout. I do incorporate it into my weekly plan at this stage of competition prepping.

Nutritional & Supplements: Good nutrition and supplementation makes all the difference to an athlete's goals and gains. I learnt this early in my journey with fitness and ensure I am constantly prepping days in advance, so that my food choices are always the healthiest and best in every possible way.

I'm gluten and lactose intolerant, so my food represents that. I enjoy a wide variety of vegetables and ethically sourced protein. My favourite forms of animal protein comes in fresh caught wild salmon, grass fed steak and free range chicken. And lots of coconut everything... I'm a coconut 'nut'

I keep my carbs are quite low and fats higher as I have a low Amalyse copy number. I love a good BCAA and take the usual base supplements to ensure I have the energy to work and train hard every day. I find myself waking well rested and energetic to take on the day no matter how busy my schedules are.

Describe you lead up to the Worlds: I've just come from competing in the WBFF Sydney Australia, so my training and prep schedule has been hectic, however it's been such an exhilarating and exciting time. Alicia, my coach has been amazing, getting my head and body all ready to take on this challenge.

How was your experience on the WBFF stage? My Sydney Australia show- I never would have thought in my wildest dreams I'd be stepping on a WBFF stage.

To be honest, the lead up to the Sydney competition was smooth sailing and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience however two days before the show, I came down with the most awful episode bronchitis and flu. My body was racked with fevers, sweats and body pain on the day of stepping on stage and so many times I thought of pulling the pin as I was just far too sick! But my will to succeed after everything I had worked for was at my fingertips and I had to push through. So, armed with all the strength I could muster, I stepped on stage (albeit a sweaty shaky mess!) I did it and walked away with third place in 35+!  It was one of those moments that I just thanked my internal fortitude and strength for getting me through it !

My London Worlds show was an absolute dream experience. I came into it on a high from Sydney and just wanted to be able to take in every opportunity... Worlds is another level of a show. Being able to rub shoulders with the Pro's was awe inspiring, most of them have been my Insta fitness idols for a long time. Everyone was so very lovely from every encounter and I do hope I can grace the WBFF Worlds stage again.

List some of the best things you noticed about WBFF. This organization is world class and being part of it makes me feel so blessed. No matter what stage of your journey with WBFF, I feel that everyone is thoroughly supported. From the organizers through to your fellow competitors, I get a feeling of comradery and support. The events are run with precision and professionalism - being a competitor in the Worlds is my dream come true!

Worlds is another level of a show

Special skills? I am an exceptionally skilled hair dresser and have been since I began my career at a tender age of 13 years old. It is my passion aside from fitness and I love what I can do for my clients and how I can boost their confidence following every treatment.

What do your parents mean to you? What did they teach you? My parents taught our family of 4 kids the best healthy upbringing they knew how... My mum passed when I was 17 but was a huge influence to my healthy lifestyle. In the 80s we'd be fed liver cleansing and vegetarian recipes and were introduced to alternative and healthy styles of eating without ever going through a McDonalds drive thru! Both mom and dad were quite fit and dad still rocks a six pack at 60. I always remember watching my dad train in the garage at home with homemade equipment and weights. Lifting and fitness was part of my world ever since I was born!

What separates Status from other fitness magazines? Status is the premier leading fitness magazine. I love that it tailors its content to all readers - moms at home though to amateurs and pros in the fitness industry.

What would it mean to you to become the next Status Fitness Cover-model? It would be the most amazing honour to grace the cover page of Status.  In my younger years, I'd buy fitness magazines thinking that the beautiful fit bodies on the cover were completely unobtainable. I'd love to inspire others around me to show them that the goals they set out are definitely achievable!

If you meet Status Editor-In-Chief, Rodney Jang, what question would you ask him? I would love to ask him how does he keep his magazine so relevant with content to ensure his readers don't feel like the articles are repetitive and 'heard before'?

5 things people would not know about you.

My favourite body part to exercise is legs

My favourite bust food is a gourmet burgers

I have an addiction to dark chocolate (in moderation)

I love holidays in Bali and Thailand

I am a family focused person coming from an Italian and Hungarian background where family is number one in our lives

Who inspires you? I'm inspired by a number of people for the different elements they represent. Robin Sharma, Tony Robbins, Alex Panos, Dave Asprey and Rhonda Byrne and of course I have so many fitness Inspirations - too many to list they are all beauties inside and out

Who do you wish to inspire? Anyone who feels as though they don't have the time or energy to be fit. Running my own Business and working up to 14 hour days for me has been no barrier!

Transformation story: Fitness has been part of my life a very young age, from the early days of crèche time to ballet, softball and my 1st gym membership at 16yrs old. I thank my mum that she instilled healthy ethics in me, even though I had to drink chloraphyll instead of cordial. My life took a massive turn @17yrs old my mum was killed in a car accident that I was the driver of the vehicle. I honestly believe that my incredible guilt manifested over the next few years and I was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer at 20 years old. So, it was operations and intensive chemotherapy for me. To complete my treatment I had an operation in my abdomen that went terribly wrong and I contracted a flesh eating bug from the surgery, called nectroctising fasciitis which ate away a portion of my stomach sent my body into toxic shock, organ failure and had me on life support. After a week I came out of my coma to realise I was 38kg and had a large portion of my stomach removed skin tissue muscle the lot... technically 2/3 of my rectus abdominal and majority of my transversal muscle. I am now the proud owner of a stomach prosthetic or ab plate that basically keeps all my insides on the inside. So, it's been a challenging road to recovery to become the woman you see standing in front of you. As with recovery comes years of learning how to 'be' in this body that had become foreign.

Learning how to walk was amongst many daily activities I took for granted was just the start. I also knew that my mind also needed a new level of conditioning as well. Day by day week by week month by month I became stronger, more comfortable with my limitations. These limitations slowly became less obvious to me as I pushed myself to progress.

If all the above wasn't enough to contend with on my journey, I also had to work through poor body image, weight gain, epilepsy, low self esteem and unsuccessful pregnancy attempt. Since aligning my growth & goals with body sculpting and getting to a WBFF stage has me feeling the most confident, strong and the healthiest I have ever been! So, I am here today as proof that the power of the mind is stronger than the power of your body.

Life goals: To always smile often, think positively, have gratitude, laugh loudly, love others and dream big
