Under-eating Madness

I was watching the news this morning. There was a story of a girl that has been competing in beauty pageants.  Her claim was that the pageant director said she was fat, and that if she skipped breakfast and ate salads to lose some weight that she would have a better chance at winning.

There are SO many things wrong with this story!  To begin, she was far from being fat.  Now in all fairness, this is my opinion!  I am not familiar with the pageant world enough to know what standards are in place for contestants, or how they hare judged. She obviously did not agree with his comments because she ended up dropping out of the pageant.  Good for her - for standing up for what she believes is right!  Whether you are a male or female, you and ONLY YOU are in charge of how you feel about your body.  It is not up to anyone else to label and define you with their opinions.

If your goal is ultimately fat loss, skipping meals and under consuming the calories your body needs to thrive are only going to make things worse long term.

The bigger issue that I have with this story was his advice. And it strikes me on a nerve that I run across far too often with bad coaching advice from people that have no idea what they are talking about.  If your goal is ultimately fat loss, skipping meals and under consuming the calories your body needs to thrive are only going to make things worse long term.  Sure, there might be some short term results seen, however long term, there are greater affects on hormones and metabolism that can take years to repair if you push too far.

The diet industry has long tried to push the “less is more” theory and it has people scared to death to eat.  Then it gets repeated by individuals like this pageant director that really likely has no formal education in providing nutrition advice pushing the same theory without even realizing its damaging effects.

Your body is a machine.  If you want it to operate that way, it needs proper fuel. Just like keeping gas in your car!  Take care of it too, it's the only body you will ever have.
